Trends in Therapeutic Focus at Fios

Projects are not created by thinking about what data type you want to produce. Projects and studies centre around a disease, a therapeutic area, or a problem that needs an analysis solution.

What therapeutic areas are most common for research brought to Fios?

Oncology Projects

At Fios, oncology is clearly the biggest area of research for our clients. In fact, over 30% of our projects each year have a focus on some area of oncology. Oncology is such a large and varied field of research – which could explain why it is so prevalent for our analyses. From our publications, it is clear that we work in varied oncology subspecialties.

Some of our recent publications showcase our work in breast cancer, prostate cancer, and lung cancer. We also have case studies highlighting oncology work.

Gastrointestinal Projects

A tenth of all projects we conduct are in gastrointestinal research. Whether that is specifically research into the microbiome (view our whitepaper on this area) or looking more broadly at gut conditions such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

We worked for many years on the MAARS-FP7 project, in collaboration with a number of academic and commercial organisations around Europe. This project specifically looked at atopic dermatitis and psoriasis of the skin; the multiyear project ended in 2019.

‘Others’

While oncology may make up the largest therapeutic area we work on, it is a highly diverse field. Smaller fields such as rare diseases (6%) and inflammation (9%) are still large enough proportions of our work to note – however we do many projects a year in diverse areas. Other areas we work in include respiratory, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

Finally, some of the projects we work on do not fit neatly into our defined project areas. We are seeing an increase in bespoke projects that do not fit into other categories – in 2020, we may need to define a COVID-19 project area.
